The start of the new year is the perfect opportunity — or excuse, totally up to you! — to revamp certain areas of your life. For many of us, the hair is the first to get a refresh. But if you’re like me, you probably haven’t zeroed in on the look even though you’re sure you want something new. To help you (and me) decide, here are some of 2021’s hair trends for inspiration and options.
I love the ’70s look, so I’m thrilled that this is in vogue again. My only problem is I don’t quite like my hair parted in the middle. The last time I did it was in my elementary days. Now, I’m not sure if I can pull it off. The carefree elegance of this look is just so appealing though, I might just bite the bullet. Upkeep might be a challenge, though.
Do you hear Joan Jett calling out to you? She says you need to try the mullet. I tried the tamer early 2000s version of this hairstyle — think Ashley Tisdale in the Suit Life of Zack and Cody moments — and I’d like to think it suited me. This year, though, I guess we’ll have to see. You can definitely use a hair curler if you want a more polished look. If you want to go full Joan (or Miley) though, a bit of texturising spray and a lot of scrunching would help.
Bleached or colored bangs
When you want to go blonde but don’t want to commit full-time. Or maybe you just want a different color to frame your face. Inspired by Claire Saffitz? No matter the reason, this fun style will be like a jolt of energy to your look. Plus, if you ever get bored with blonde, you can always dye it with a neon color to spice things up.
Good ol’ bob
This never got passe because it’s a classic, but it’s a good thing it’s going on top of lists again this year. The bob is one of my favorite styles, though I don’t usually have it because it’s hard to maintain. If you think it’s a bit too old-fashioned for you, go for a stand-out color.
It’s also the year of the curls. Get on the Curly Girl method if you haven’t yet and let those curves on top of your head bounce and shine. If you already have your own version of the process down pat, it’s time be more adventurous. Ever tried cutting your bangs? This is the sign you’re looking for if you haven’t yet.
Subtle curtain bangs or experimental blonde bangs, it’s certainly up to you. Take this as the go signal you’ve been waiting for and rock it, girl!
