I’d written about this book before but the post was deleted when I forgot to renew my site’s hosting. So here it is again because it’ Mother’s Day and it feels like the right time to (re)share.
I’ve refused to celebrate occasions just because I feel like they’ve become quite capitalistic (and consumerist). Yes, I have become that cynical. But today I am reminded that there’s nothing wrong about celebrating life’s milestones and that presents are not mandatory — they can still (and should) be special without gifts. The greatest gift is the relationship you have with those who mean most to you. And to have a relationship like Maya Angelou with her mom, which she shared candidly in Mom & Me & Mom, is priceless. I share more of my thoughts on the book on the video below, but here’s a quote from it I’d like to always remember.
“She liberated me from a society that would have had me think of myself as the lower of the low. She liberated me to life. And from that time to this time, I have taken life by the lapels and I have said, “I’m with you, kid.”
